Update on advisory group on records relating to slavery in the Baring Archive

In July 2020, the Trustees of the Baring Archive announced that they would be establishing a working group to consider the records in the archive that relate to financial activities associated with slavery.
Risks and Rewards site to be withdrawn from service

The Risks and Rewards website will be been withdrawn from service from 31 December 2020.
From May 2012 to December 2020 www.risksandrewards.org.uk used actual sources from The Baring Archive to open up the world of finance past and present.
Archive materials relating to slavery in The Baring Archive

The Trustees of the Baring Archive are aware that there are records in The Baring Archive that relate to slavery. Examples include documents concerning the international trade in slave grown commodities like sugar and cotton and papers relating to mortgages on plantations where these commodities were grown.
Digitised Collections site now accessible online

We are pleased to announce that our Digitised Collections site is now accessible online. The site enables priority areas of the archive to be made more accessible to researchers and the general public, opening up the collection to people from all over the world.
Baring portraits on show at the Guildhall

Two portraits from the Baring Archive's collection are currently on display at the Guildhall Art Gallery.
James Sant's 1872 portrait of George, Cecil and Everard Baring and E Tayleur's portrait of 3rd Lord Revelstoke as a boy have been loaned to the exhibition Seen and Heard: Victorian Children in the Frame.

Digitisation Pilot Project Update

The Baring Archive has made significant progress with its six-month pilot project to make its archives on Argentina more accessible.
6958 documents telling the story of Baring’s business in Argentina have now been imaged. The documents cover the period 1814 to 1925.
Business History Conference 2019 call for papers

The 2019 Annual Meeting of the Business History Conference will take place at the Hilton Cartagena de Indias, Colombia from 14-16 March 2019.
The theme of the conference will be Globalization and De-Globalization: Shifts of Power and Wealth.

Francis Baring portrait on loan to Bowood House

The Baring Archive’s portrait of Sir Francis Baring, founder of Barings is now on a long term loan to Bowood House.
Bowood House in Wiltshire has been home to the Lansdowne family since 1754 and houses a wealth of unique art and antiques with many historical treasures.
Digitising the Baring Archive

The Baring Archive is about to embark on a major digitisation project to make its archives on Latin America more accessible.
We hope that through this project we will begin to open up the collection to a wider audience to enable researchers to use the archives from anywhere in the world.

Messrs Baring Brothers & Co on show at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art

A painting of four key figures in the history of Barings is currently featuring in an exhibition in the Netherlands.
Ambrose McEvoy's painting, Messrs Baring Brothers & Co, was painted in 1926 and depicts John Baring, Cecil Baring, Alfred Mildmay and Gaspard Farrer.
Barings features on London BookBench

Throughout the summer fifty BookBench sculptures have been decorating the streets of London. Barings features on the bench depicting Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne, which was published in 1873.

Conclusion of successful exhibition at Museum of American Finance, NY

"Barings in America: An Interactive Investment Experience" has recently closed at the Museum of American Finance (MOAF) in New York. The exhibition, which opened in December 2012, was extended from its planned closure date in April 2013. It was seen by more than 25,000 people.

Baring Archive featured by Bloomberg News

The Baring Archive has made the news in a Bloomberg article on the Falklands Referendum.
In 1824, Barings lead managed a £1 million bond for the State of Buenos Aires however, in 1828, the Argentine Government defaulted.
Remarkably, after some twenty years of negotiations, the Argentine Government offered to settle the debt by dropping their claim to the Falkland islands.
Oral history extracts now available online

Extracts of a series of oral history interviews are now available in an online exhibition on The Baring Archive's website.
The extracts give an insight into what it was like to work at Barings from 1940 through to the 1990s. Topics covered include the Second World War, recruitment, computerisation, globalisation and the 1995 crisis.
The Baring Archive in Hampshire

Until mid-March, visitors to Hampshire Record Office will be able to find out more about Barings. An exhibition to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Barings is now on display in the lobby of the records centre.
Barings was founded in 1762 by John, Francis and Charles Baring.
