Digitising the Baring Archive
The Baring Archive is about to embark on a major digitisation project to make its archives on Latin America more accessible.
We hope that through this project we will begin to open up the collection to a wider audience to enable researchers to use the archives from anywhere in the world.
Digitisation is a complex process and involves cataloguing documents to make them searchable, conserving them, imaging them and putting the images and their contextual information online so that they can be used by members of the public.
The initial step will be a six month pilot project. This will involve archive material relating to Argentina that documents Baring’s business there and significant historic events from 1817 through to 1925.
Following the pilot project the archive is hoping to continue with a two year project to digitise a significant proportion of the collection’s most important items.
